Three By Three was an open studio, gallery and workshop organised by Chester based artists David Heke, Jenny Ryrie and Liz Ellis at 63 Watergate Street, Chester in August 201. It featured displays of paintings, sculpture and photography, with drop-in workshops for the public. The three artists are members of the artists collective ‘chart’ which meet regularly at Telford’s Warehouse in Chester and holds joint exhibitions.
The event (a government backed initiative supported by Cheshire West and Chester Councli and Chester Renaissance) involved the artists transforming an empty basement shop premises in Watergate Street from a gloomy dust-filled space to a sparkling ‘white cube’. Once the artwork was installed the artists opened the doors to the public for a week, inviting visitors not only to enjoy the exhibition but also to watch the artists producing new pieces of work, to ask questions about the various techniques and to have a go themselves at modelling in clay and sketching seashells using watercolour crayons and chalks.
The artists also hosted a special evening viewing of their exhibition with wine and refreshments for their guests. This was well attended by friends and art lovers and altogether the whole event attracted over 500 visitors.
